Program Description Lanai Road Elementary School opened its new two-room state-of-the-art Wonder of Reading Library with ceremonies on April 27, 2001. A grant from the Wonder of Reading organization matched $25,000 in funds previously raised by the Lanai Road PTA, Friends of Lanai, and community members. In 2004, the school was awarded an additional $6,000 Wonder of Reading Grant to purchase more library books. In 2008, the school was awarded another grant to renovate the circulation desk and the wearing carpet areas. Additionally, we acquired a grant called “We the People” to further enrich our American Heritage library collection. Currently, we have a library aide who assists the children in selecting and checking out titles from our extensive collection of books. Mrs. Mukul Rathor is our library aide and is available for assistance every day of the week. New this year, FOLB Funds have allowed us to hire an additional Library Media Aide three days a week. The Library is open Monday to Friday from 8:20am to 2:40pm. Each class has 40 minutes of Library time each week. The Nest is our outside library garden cove, complete with comfortable sofas and chairs and picnic tables decorated for checkers and chess. This area is open Monday to Friday, before and after school and during recess and lunch. Summer Reading List |
Library Shelving Program We have a Library Shelving Program which utilizes parent volunteers to come in and help shelf books every day of the week. If you are interested in assisting the librarian with shelving (30-90 minutes per week/month… flexible), please contact Marla Vaughn. |

Book Clubs In addition to traditional “library time,” Lanai is also proud to host book clubs for kids. Being a book club leader for your child’s classroom or grade is simple; all you need is a love of books and reading. Our Book Club chairperson provides title recommendations, facilitator guidelines and sample discussion questions to make being a leader easy and fun. Classroom Book Clubs meet monthly and Recess Book Clubs meet weekly. Volunteers may personalize the clubs to the interests of the children in the class or grade. Book clubs are a fantastic way for parents and children to be engaged in an educational activity together…without feeling like it’s school! Bookplates & Shelfplates A wonderful way to honor your child or class, or salute a loved one, is to purchase a custom bookplate or shelfplate. Bookplates display the names of donors as well as honorees and may be customized "in honor" or "in memory." Bookplates are placed inside the front cover of a library book and seen by all future readers. Shelfplates are brass plaques featuring a brief message with the names of the donor and honoree. The plaque is affixed to the edge of a library bookshelf, visible to all browsers. Come take a peek at the many ways our Lanai parents have paid tribute to those they love. Student Book Reviews Student book reviews is a new program at Lanai started in February 2010. We have such wonderful books in our Wonder of Reading library and want all the students to know how some students view their library books. There are 2 forms to select from to write a book review. Every student in every grade is able to take a form, write a book review and turn it in to the librarian. After 3 book reviews, a student will get to choose from a vast assortment of really interesting book marks. Please see the librarian for your book marks. Every book review will be displayed on one of the book review bulletin boards in the library. Show off your writing and let someone read about the book you just read…………….Write on! Any questions or assistance with book reviews, please contact Marla Vaughn at presmom@aol.com. |
