When will the enrollment packets be available?
2008 packets will be available on April
28 for residents and May 1 for non-reisdents. This changes from year to year. Please keep viewing our website or
call the office the week before to ascertain the exact date LAUSD will
release the packets to us for distribution. Distribution of packets on a
“first come, first served” basis usually begins at 9AM (subject to
change).
How Can I determine if I live in Lanai’s
enrollment district?
Easy! Enter your home address into
the
LAUSD School Finder
to
find out if you reside within
Lanai's
boundaries.
Who is Lanai Road School?
Lanai Road is a school that celebrates
its diversity. This diversity is embraced by our administration, staff,
faculty, students and families. It is what makes us the great success we
are. Our huge gains in our academic scores are gains made by EVERY
segment of the student body; English native speakers as well as English
Language Learners! Our school is a school of inclusion - from children
of color to children with special needs…Lanai truly means
“no child left behind”.
Lanai is a school whose success is owned
by everyone: faculty and staff, families and our business community.
Without the ACTIVE PARTICIPATION of ALL of our
stakeholders, Lanai’s success would not be possible. We are a school
with a legacy of intense volunteerism…no an expectation of
volunteerism! So if you enroll your child here…roll up your sleeves and
get ready to help!
If I live in Lanai’s district, am I
guaranteed a seat for my child?
Neighborhood schools are bound by law to
accommodate the residents within their enrollment district first.
However, we do URGE you to complete the enrollment process as soon as
possible so that we might make available to your child the most
academically appropriate classroom placement possible. This can only be
assured if you enroll your child EARLY!
What
Documents do I need to present to enroll my child?
The school will have no copying facilities available to
copy documents. If you are planning to turn in
your completed packets on that same day, you
will need to supply both the original and a copy of the following:
| 1. |
Student's birth certificate
(stamped county copy) or passport. |
| 2.
|
Student's completed record of
immunizations, including the Mantoux TB test. |
| 3. |
A physical is required for
first grade. We suggest this be done when entering
kindergarten. |
|
4. |
If residing
within Lanai boundaries, you will need a current utility
bill (not a phone bill) and matching state identification
card to show proof of residency |
| 5. |
If applying for a permit, you
will be informed of other papers that may be needed. |
What is the School for Advanced Studies
and how do I find out if my child is eligible?
S.A.S. is a program developed by LAUSD to
address the education of students who are able to delve into the
grade-level curriculum at an “in-depth” level. All Lanai students will
be learning the same grade-level curriculum. SAS students will be
“digging deeper” into the subject matter with a greater application of
the analytical thinking that advanced learners yearn to stay engaged.
Eligibility for our SAS screening program is determined by an informal
“interview” conducted by our screening personnel on campus. Official SAS
classes begin in 3rd grade.
When will the Screening Interviews be
conducted?
Screening for entering Kindergarteners is
expected to begin around mid August. For children seeking to enter Lanai in
an upper grade, SAS screening will take place in early June. You may
request that your child not be interviewed if you choose. If your
enrollment packet is complete, you may arrange for your screening
appointment the day you turn in your packet. Please make every effort to
take the appointment offered to you. It will not be possible to
accommodate everyone’s schedule so we ask that you be as flexible as
possible. SAS placement in 3rd – 5th grade is
based upon Gifted Identification or high percentiles in state testing.
What does the Screening Kindergarten
Interview cover?
It is an informal interview with your
child. If your child is more comfortable with you in the room, parents
are welcome to stay. Questions are asked of the child in the manner of a
casual conversation not a test format. Basically, the screener is trying
to determine the reading readiness of your child. They will be asked to
read a simple text and perhaps answer very basic math questions.
Remember, that this is an instructional
screening to place students in the best situation based upon a number of
readiness factors. Kinder teachers will be making the final placement
arrangements. It is important to realize that reading readiness at
kindergarten and even first grade is impacted greatly by your child’s
current developmental stage. For this reason official placement in SAS
does not begin until 3rd grade.
How many Kindergarten classes are being
offered at Lanai for 2008?
Four.
There will most likely be two early
reader classes and two emergent reader classes, but this is subject to
change based on the students’ needs.
I do not live in Lanai’s enrollment
district. How can I get my child into Lanai?
This year there may be no permits
available. First priority for enrollment is given to children residing
within our enrollment area. Any remaining spaces will be given first to
permit requests from families with siblings of current students. Any
other permits are highly unlikely except to fill a space or two in upper
grade classrooms.
|
Because of these limitations, ALL
applications for enrollment will be reviewed carefully with special
attention being paid to verification of residency of “in
district” applications. Inaccurate or incorrect address will result
in the immediate removal of the student from enrollment at Lanai. |
The school in my enrollment area
(resident school) has an SAS program. Can I still apply for an SAS
permit for my child to attend Lanai?
No. Only children whose own neighborhood
school does not offer an SAS program may apply for an SAS
permit to attend Lanai.
If I get a permit for my child to attend
Lanai, do I need to re-apply for it every year?
Yes, except for SAS permits. At Lanai we
foresee that the number of seats available to permit students will be
limited each year. Permits are granted by the releasing principal and
the receiving principal. These must be renewed each year. All criteria
for the re-issuance of the permit must still be valid. Renewal will be
based on the best interests of the child and the school i.e., the
ability of the child to benefit from attending Lanai. Children who are
frequently tardy or absent would be better served at their home school.
Children whose parents have difficulty driving safely at Lanai school
would be safer at their home school.
Will my other children be guaranteed
“legacy” permits?
No. Although Lanai administration will
remain sensitive to the family, it cannot guarantee that permit space
will be available for siblings. In fact, it is very unlikely.
My child has been tested as “gifted” by
my former school (non-LAUSD). Does he/she have to be re-tested?
Possibly. Please bring all the paperwork
in your possession regarding your child’s testing from the other school
with you when you turn in your enrollment packet. Our Gifted Coordinator
will review it and let you know what additional testing may be needed,
if any.
I’d like to see the school. Are there any
school tours?
Parent organization leaders and the
administration will provide five tours during the school year. Tours
begin at 9am and will be conducted on October 3, November 7, January 16,
February 27 and March 27. Please see the Calendar page of the website
for any updates to this schedule.
We hope this guide answers most of your
questions. We urge you to visit our website often as new information is
added and updated frequently. You are also welcome to attend our
PTA/Friends of Lanai Booster meetings which are held on the third
Wednesday of every month and rotate times between 8:30AM, 3PM and 7PM.
